CHD Awareness Week

CHD (Congenital Heart Defect) Awareness week is coming up February 7-14th 2008.
Congenital heart defects are the leading casue of birth defect-related deaths in the US. Despite this fact, there is a severe lack of awareness about congenital heart defects and a lack of funding for research that is essential to the diagnosis and treatment of these defects.

Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week is recognized by many states around the nation through government officials who have issued proclamations declaring February 7-14 Congenital Heart DEfect Awareness Week. We join together to increase awareness about these defects and heart disease in children in hopes of creating a better future for our children so they can live longer, healthier lives.

Just a few Facts:

*Up to 1.3 million Americans have CHD. Almost half are under age 25.

*9 out of every 1,000 infants are expected to be born with heart defects, or 36,000 babies a year in the US.

*In 2003, over 25,000 cardiovascular operations were performed on people age 19 or younger.
